April 14, 2026: Tensions flared in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday after a violent clash broke out between local residents and security forces, leaving several people injured and vehicles set on fire.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 1:30 PM near Thinungei, when a security team moving through the area was stopped by a group of locals amid rumours about the identity and purpose of the personnel. A crowd soon gathered and blocked the movement of security vehicles.

Police said at least four individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, while efforts are underway to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of security personnel.
On April 10, a jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF) was killed in Ukhrul district while on duty, underscoring the deteriorating security situation in the hill areas.
Earlier, on April 7, a tragic attack in Bishnupur district shocked the state. Two children were killed when a projectile struck a civilian home in Tronglaobi. The victims—a young boy and his infant sibling—were reportedly asleep at the time of the attack, which also left their mother critically injured. The incident triggered widespread protests across the Imphal Valley and intensified anger on the ground.
Allegations and Escalating Pattern of Violence
Amid the unrest, some local sources and community accounts have alleged the involvement of suspected Arambai Tenggol cadres in recent incidents, though these claims remain unverified and have not been officially confirmed.
According to these accounts, a series of incidents over the past week point to a pattern of escalating confrontations:
- April 7: Armed groups allegedly attacked a CRPF camp in Tronglaobi, damaging vehicles and property, and reportedly taking equipment belonging to personnel.
- April 13: A mob comprising various groups allegedly targeted Indian Army armoured vehicles with stones and slingshots.
- April 14: Fresh allegations claim that personnel of the armed forces were attacked in the Thinungei–Ningthoukhong area, with vehicles reportedly set on fire.
Officials have not independently verified these claims, and no formal attribution has been made so far.
Situation Remains Volatile
The continuing violence has led to sustained protests, road blockades, and disruptions across key routes, particularly along Tiddim Road. Demonstrators have vowed to continue agitation until justice is delivered for recent killings.
With multiple flashpoints and deepening mistrust between communities, the situation in Bishnupur district and other parts of the state remains highly volatile. Security forces have intensified deployment in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
