May 14, 2926: After nearly 10 days of intense speculation, lobbying, and behind-the-scenes consultations, the Congress party on Thursday finally named senior leader V. D. Satheesan as its choice for the next Chief Minister of Kerala. The announcement ends days of suspense following the United Democratic Front (UDF)’s sweeping victory in the April 9, 2026 Assembly elections.
The 61-year-old former Leader of Opposition emerged as the consensus candidate after edging past prominent contenders such as K. C. Venugopal and veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Party insiders said the Congress high command arrived at the decision after extensive consultations with MLAs, senior party functionaries, and alliance partners during the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting.

Reward for Leading the UDF Revival
Satheesan is widely seen as the architect of the UDF’s emphatic comeback in Kerala. Under his leadership, the alliance secured 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, bringing an end to more than a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule led by Pinarayi Vijayan.
A lawyer by profession and a six-time MLA from Paravur in Ernakulam district since 2001, Satheesan became Leader of Opposition in 2021 after succeeding Chennithala. Over the past five years, he built a strong opposition campaign targeting the LDF government on issues including governance failures, law and order, unemployment, and the state’s economic challenges.
Within the UDF, Satheesan had emerged as the clear grassroots favourite. Key allies, particularly the Indian Union Muslim League, openly backed his candidature, describing him as the leader who kept the alliance united during a crucial electoral battle. Public support on the ground and across social media platforms also tilted heavily in his favour.

A Three-Way Contest
The race for the chief minister’s post evolved into a closely watched three-cornered battle marked by factional equations within the Congress.
- Satheesan enjoyed strong backing from UDF workers, a significant bloc of MLAs, and allies such as the IUML.
- Venugopal, known for his proximity to the Gandhi family and influence within the party organisation, reportedly had support from sections of the high command and several legislators.
- Chennithala, despite being viewed as a dark horse, remained a respected senior leader with decades of administrative and political experience.
The delay in announcing the decision triggered protests, banner campaigns, and growing pressure from party workers demanding clarity. Senior Congress leaders, including V. M. Sudheeran, publicly urged the leadership to honour what they described as the “people’s mandate” by selecting Satheesan.
Congress sources said the final decision followed marathon discussions involving senior central leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, with the party attempting to balance organisational loyalty, electoral performance, and administrative capability.
Satheesan is expected to be sworn in as Chief Minister within the next few days, ahead of the May 23 deadline set by the Governor. He will head a Congress-led UDF government that is likely to include representation from alliance partners.
The new administration faces a demanding agenda — reviving Kerala’s economy, addressing mounting public debt, generating employment opportunities for the youth, and restoring investor confidence. Strengthening law and order and implementing welfare measures promised during the election campaign are also expected to be key priorities.
Reacting to the announcement, Satheesan said he was “humbled by the trust” placed in him by both the party leadership and the people of Kerala. He promised a government focused on development, inclusivity, and transparent governance.
UDF allies welcomed the decision, calling it a reflection of public sentiment and political reality. The LDF, while criticising the delay in the selection process, congratulated Satheesan and promised to play the role of a constructive but strong opposition. Meanwhile, the BJP — which failed to secure significant gains despite an aggressive campaign — mocked the prolonged suspense but said the new government would ultimately be judged by its performance.
