Delhi Police are examining the student’s counselling records and other institutional information as they investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. IIT Delhi has expressed condolences to his family.

NEW DELHI, August 22: A 31-year-old MSc Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi died on Saturday morning after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of the institute’s Lecture Hall Complex, police said.
The incident was reported to the Delhi Police at around 8.33 am, following which personnel from the Kishangarh police station reached the campus and took the student to the IIT Delhi hospital. He was declared brought dead by doctors.
According to the preliminary police inquiry, the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 am. He subsequently went to the Lecture Hall Complex and took an elevator to the sixth floor before falling from the front side of the building.
The police have called in crime and forensic teams to examine the spot and collect evidence as part of the investigation. Officials said no apparent injuries other than those attributable to the fall had been found during the initial examination.
No suicide note has been recovered, police said. A mobile phone was found in the student’s pocket and is being examined as part of the investigation.
Police are also obtaining the student’s counselling records and other relevant information from IIT Delhi to establish the circumstances leading up to his death. The authorities have not disclosed a possible reason and said the facts are still being verified.

IIT Delhi expressed grief over the student’s death and said it was extending support to his family. The institute said the matter was being investigated by Delhi Police.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the mental-health pressures that can affect students in demanding academic environments. However, police have not yet established a link between the student’s academic circumstances and his death, and the investigation is continuing.
The case comes amid continuing concerns over student well-being and mental health at higher educational institutions, where academic pressure, personal difficulties and uncertainty about the future can sometimes compound existing vulnerabilities.
For now, police are examining the available evidence, including the student’s phone, institutional records and counselling history, as they seek to piece together what happened before the fatal fall.
IIT Delhi has not disclosed further personal details about the student, and the investigation remains underway.
