With 108 seats in a 234-member Assembly, TVK falls short of the majority mark but is well positioned to cross it through post-poll alliances. Vijay’s move to stake claim reflects both urgency and strategic timing, as negotiations with regional players gather momentum behind the scenes.

Chennai, May 5, 2026: Actor-turned-politician and TVK chief Talapathy Vijay on Tuesday formally wrote to Governor R. N. Ravi, staking claim to form the next government and seeking two weeks’ time to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly.
In his letter, Vijay said his party had emerged as the single largest formation in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and was in advanced talks with “like-minded parties” to secure the numbers required for a stable government. He reiterated TVK’s commitment to a corruption-free, development-oriented administration rooted in Tamil identity and social justice.
TVK Emerges as Largest Party
According to official results, TVK secured a striking 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, was reduced to 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam managed 47. The remaining seats were won by smaller parties and independents.
With the majority mark at 118, TVK falls short by 10 seats but is widely seen as being in a strong position to form the government with outside support.
TVK chief #Vijay has reportedly written a letter to Governor Rajendra, requesting an invitation to form the government in Tamil Nadu. Alliance Arithmetic
TVK has initiated outreach to smaller parties that could prove decisive:
- Indian National Congress – 5 seats
- Pattali Makkal Katchi – 4 seats
- Left parties (CPI, CPI-M) – 4 seats
- Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi – 2 seats
Together, these parties hold 15 seats—enough to comfortably push TVK past the halfway mark even with partial backing. Congress sources indicated that a decision on support would follow consultations with the party leadership.

Historic Political Shift
The verdict marks a dramatic breakthrough for TVK, founded just two years ago. Vijay’s campaign—focused on youth empowerment, jobs, education, and clean governance—resonated strongly, especially among first-time voters and urban constituencies, effectively disrupting the decades-long dominance of the DMK-AIADMK duopoly.
Senior DMK leaders conceded defeat, with Stalin expected to submit his resignation. The AIADMK, despite an aggressive campaign, failed to consolidate anti-DMK sentiment.
Governor Ravi is expected to invite Vijay for discussions shortly. The two-week window sought by TVK is likely to be used to firm up alliances and outline a common minimum programme with supporting parties.
Political observers have described the result as a “tectonic shift” in Tamil Nadu politics, signalling the rise of a new force capable of reshaping the state’s political landscape. All eyes are now on how swiftly Vijay can translate his electoral success into a stable government.
