In a sharp escalation, Gandhi claimed that key electoral bodies are being “remote controlled,” and argued that the BJP’s true fear lies in free and fair elections where it would struggle to secure a majority.

New Delhi/ May 6, 2026: Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday intensified his attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging large-scale “vote theft” and manipulation in multiple state and national elections, including the recently concluded polls in Assam and West Bengal.
In a series of posts on X, Gandhi claimed that the BJP has been stealing electoral mandates with the alleged support of institutions, including the Election Commission of India.

“Seats are sometimes stolen through vote theft, sometimes entire governments,” Gandhi wrote, alleging that roughly every sixth of the BJP’s 240 Lok Sabha MPs had won through such means. Using the BJP’s own terminology against it, he questioned whether these MPs should be described as “infiltrators.”
Referring to Haryana, where the BJP retained power, Gandhi said the “entire government is ‘infiltrator’.” He further alleged that institutions responsible for managing elections have been compromised and are being “remote controlled,” accusing them of tampering with voter lists and the electoral process.

Gandhi asserted that the BJP’s “real fear is the truth,” claiming that in a fair election, the party “couldn’t win 140 seats” even today.
Criticism of Internal Congress Reactions
In a separate post, Gandhi cautioned party colleagues and others against celebrating the Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s setbacks in West Bengal. He described the alleged “theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate” as a serious threat to Indian democracy.
“Some in the Congress, and others, are gloating about TMC’s loss. They need to understand this clearly — the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a big step forward by the BJP in its mission to destroy Indian democracy,” he said. “Put petty politics aside. This is not about one party or another. This is about India.”
‘Playbook’ of Election Manipulation
Gandhi reiterated his long-standing charge that the BJP, with alleged support from the Election Commission, has been “stealing” elections using a repeated strategy. He also echoed Mamata Banerjee’s claim that more than 100 seats were “stolen” in West Bengal.
“We have seen this playbook before: Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Lok Sabha 2024, etc.,” he posted, using the Hindi phrase “चुनाव चोरी” (election theft) to underscore his allegation.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following recent Assembly elections in several states. The BJP has consistently rejected such allegations, maintaining that its electoral victories reflect the will of the people and accusing the opposition of making baseless claims after defeats.
