April 26, 2026: A Secret Service agent was struck by a round during a security breach at the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner at the Washington Hilton, when an armed suspect opened fire near the main security screening area in the hotel lobby. The agent’s protective equipment—believed to be body armor—absorbed the impact, and the agent was not injured.
According to multiple law enforcement and media reports, the suspect fired several shots toward Secret Service personnel stationed near the magnetometers, where guests and officials were being screened before entering the ballroom. In response, Secret Service agents immediately engaged the suspect and returned fire, ultimately neutralizing the threat. The suspect was later taken into custody, despite earlier conflicting reports suggesting the individual may have been killed.
The incident unfolded inside a highly secured environment while President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other senior administration officials were attending the dinner inside the ballroom. As the gunfire erupted from the lobby area, agents inside the ballroom drew weapons, issued urgent commands, and rapidly evacuated all protectees from the stage and seating area.

Witnesses described hearing multiple loud bangs—reported variously as 4 to 8 shots—followed by immediate chaos as guests ducked under tables and security personnel moved through the room. The evacuation of the President and senior officials was described as swift and tightly coordinated, with Secret Service agents forming protective formations while escorting them out of the venue.
Law enforcement sources said the suspect never reached the main ballroom and was intercepted near or at the screening checkpoint area in the lobby. The hotel was immediately placed under lockdown as additional tactical units swept the building to secure the scene and ensure there were no secondary threats.

No injuries were reported among the President, First Lady, Vice President, guests, or other law enforcement personnel aside from the agent whose protective gear was struck. Officials emphasized that the agent remained fully unharmed due to the effectiveness of the body armor.
The WHCA Dinner was suspended following the incident. The Secret Service confirmed it was investigating a shooting near the main magnetometer screening area, and the FBI along with the Metropolitan Police Department joined the ongoing inquiry.
President Trump later praised the response of law enforcement and the Secret Service, stating that they acted “quickly and bravely,” and noted that the suspect had been apprehended. He also indicated support for continuing the event but said the final decision would rest with security authorities.
As of the latest updates, the suspect remains in custody and the scene has been secured. Investigators are working to determine the suspect’s identity, motive, and how the weapon was brought into proximity of a high-security presidential event. No broader threats have been identified so far, and authorities continue to review evidence, including witness accounts and security footage.
