May 4, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee, on Monday reacted strongly as early counting trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking a clear lead in the state Assembly election.
According to Election Commission updates and television projections, the BJP was seen crossing the majority mark and leading in a significant number of constituencies, while the TMC was trailing in overall seat trends as counting progressed through the early rounds.
Speaking to reporters amid the unfolding results, Banerjee cautioned party workers against panic and urged counting agents to remain inside counting centres until the process was fully complete. She alleged that early trends were part of a “pre-decided narrative” being projected in favour of the BJP.
Banerjee claimed that counting had been slowed in some centres and pointed to alleged irregularities in certain constituencies, including Kalyani, where she suggested there were discrepancies in electronic voting machine processes. She also accused central forces deployed during counting of acting in a biased manner against TMC workers.

Despite the early trends showing the BJP ahead, Banerjee insisted that the contest was far from over. She argued that initial rounds of counting do not reflect the full picture, noting that the process involves multiple phases and that the TMC traditionally performs strongly in later rounds.
She further alleged that the Election Commission was not accurately reflecting ground realities in its reporting of trends and claimed that TMC’s internal assessment still showed stronger performance in several constituencies.
Calling for calm among party cadres, Banerjee said there was no reason for discouragement at this stage and expressed confidence that the final outcome could still change as counting progressed.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders maintained that the trends reflected a clear mandate in their favour, with party candidates leading in multiple regions across North, Central, and parts of South Bengal, strengthening indications of a possible political shift in the state.
