October 7: New Delhi, October 7: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was detained on Wednesday evening after Delhi Police stopped an INDIA bloc march short of Jantar Mantar, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was taken away minutes later after she lay down on the road.
Buses carrying Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition MPs had set out for Jantar Mantar, which the bloc called the designated protest site, after police blocked a march toward the Election Commission a day earlier. Security personnel stopped the vehicles on the approach. Rahul Gandhi confronted senior officers, saying, “This won’t work.” An officer replied, “You tell me how it should be done.” Amid slogans of “We are not going anywhere,” police put him into a bus and detained him.
Minutes later, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stepped off a bus and said, “Is this the way? You can see what they are doing.” She then lay down on the road. Women police surrounded her while Congress women workers stayed around her; she and party colleagues said she was being mishandled. Police removed her from the site as well. Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien and other MPs were also detained as the area was cleared.

On Tuesday, opposition MPs marching from Parliament toward the Election Commission office were stopped near Akashvani Bhawan. Rahul Gandhi climbed a barricade and waved the tricolour; he and Priyanka then entered the All India Radio premises and sat in for about eight hours, saying they would not leave until MPs were allowed to meet the Election Commissioners. Police removed them around 8 pm, took them to Kingsway Camp, and released them later that night. About 260 people, including MPs, were detained, police said. An FIR was registered over alleged unauthorised entry into the premises. Asked about the case, Rahul Gandhi said he already had about 45 FIRs and wanted 100, calling each one a “medal.”
Opposition leaders allege irregularities in the roll revision and have accused the Commission of “vote chori.” The Election Commission has described internal objections raised during drafting as normal administrative practice. Neither claim has been independently adjudicated
