Counting was underway for 28 Legislative Council seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
In Bihar, BJP candidate Narendra Pratap Singh, also known as NP Singh, was leading by around 600 votes in the Tirhut Teachers’ constituency after elimination rounds. Independent candidate Bhushan Jha was his principal challenger, with the formal result yet to be announced.

The Saran Teachers’ constituency witnessed a more complicated count. Of the 9,570 votes counted, 371 were declared invalid. Independent candidate Rahul Raj was leading after the first-preference count, but no candidate had secured the required quota, prompting officials to proceed with second-preference votes.
Trends from other Bihar constituencies, including Patna, were still awaited. Results were expected later in the evening or after midnight.
Meanwhile, SP president Akhilesh Yadav alleged attempts to manipulate the elections and questioned the Election Commission’s credibility. He called for voter lists linked to Aadhaar and biometric verification, and claimed that counting had been halted in the Agra Teachers’ constituency despite SP candidates leading. He urged the Election Commission to intervene.
SP candidate Aakash Agarwal, contesting from Agra, also alleged that counting had been stopped for around 30 minutes without explanation while he was ahead.
Reports of protests and allegations of irregularities emerged from outside some counting centres in Bihar. Security arrangements remained tight at counting venues across the states.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the official results after the counting process is completed. The early leads for SP candidates in Varanasi have attracted particular attention because the city is represented in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the trends remain provisional until the final results are declared.
