AMRITSAR: A long-standing feud turned deadly in Punjab’s Amritsar district on Monday night when Tirath Singh, brother of AAP leader Karaj Singh, was shot dead near a gurdwara in Jhite Kalan village. His friend, Ranjit Singh, was also wounded in the firing.

The attack took place under the jurisdiction of Chatiwind police station in Amritsar rural. Police said the two men were returning after paying obeisance at the gurdwara when the assailants allegedly opened fire, discharging seven to eight rounds before escaping.

Tirath Singh suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Ranjit Singh was admitted for treatment and is reported to be out of danger.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said four men—Gurdit Singh, Harkirat Singh, Gurjant Singh and Gora, all residents of Jhite Kalan—had been booked in connection with the killing. Police teams have launched raids to trace and arrest the accused. No arrests had been made when this report was filed.

Investigators suspect that the shooting was linked to an old dispute between Gurdit Singh and Karaj Singh’s family. According to the police account, the two sides had clashed earlier, but villagers intervened and helped settle the matter.

From ‘War on Drugs’ to ‘Business on Drugs’—AAP’s deadly syndicate exposed in Punjab.

The recent IT raids on the Suman-Arbour network expose how drug de-addiction centers across Punjab were turned into hubs for distributing BNX tablets and routing black money abroad through hawala.

Such a widespread, illegal racket cannot operate across 15 cities without high-level patronization from the CMO.

The AAP government came to power promising a drug-free Punjab, but has ended up presiding over drug profiteering. Every individual involved—from the ground operatives to their political patrons—will be held accountable under the full force of the law.

On Monday night, the accused allegedly confronted Tirath Singh and his friend near the gurdwara. An argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, following which Gurdit Singh’s alleged accomplices joined the confrontation and opened fire.

Chatiwind police registered a case against the four accused on the basis of statements provided by the victim’s family. The investigation is under way to establish the precise sequence of events and the individual roles of those named in the case.

Karaj Singh is a block samiti member, while his mother serves as the village sarpanch. Both are associated with the AAP.

Police are investigating the killing as a suspected outcome of the longstanding rivalry. The allegations against the four named men have yet to be established in court.

Punjab has witnessed a troubling spate of violent incidents in recent days, raising questions about law and order under the AAP government led by Bhagwant Mann. From a spate of recent killings to an extortion-linked firing in Mehta, the incidents have heightened concerns about gun violence, criminal intimidation and public safety. The recurrence of such attacks demands more than routine police assurances.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
