Bangkok authorities have intensified their investigation into the deadly beer house fire that killed 27 people, focusing on a suspected electrical fault and possible fire safety lapses. The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards at Thailand’s nightlife venues.

July 13: Thai authorities have intensified their investigation into the devastating fire that tore through a packed live-music beer house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district early Monday, with forensic teams examining whether an electrical malfunction and possible fire safety failures combined to cause one of the country’s deadliest nightlife disasters in recent years.
The death toll remained at 27, while 63 people continue to receive treatment, including 22 who remain in serious or critical condition, officials said several hours after the blaze was brought under control. Authorities cautioned that the toll could still change as some victims remain in intensive care.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight at Rong Beer Na Ladprao, a popular live-music venue near Soi Lat Phrao 1 Road in the Ladprao area. Firefighters contained the blaze within about 30 minutes, but by then thick smoke had engulfed the building, trapping dozens of patrons inside.

Investigators Examine Electrical System
Attention has now turned to the possible cause of the blaze.
Investigators are focusing on reports that smoke was first seen emerging from an electrical switchboard or circuit breaker near the stage moments before the venue suffered a power outage. Witnesses said a loud explosion followed, after which flames spread rapidly across the ceiling.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said survivor testimonies would form a key part of the investigation, while forensic experts continue examining the building’s electrical installations and fire damage.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said preliminary findings indicate that combustible decorative materials attached to the ceiling accelerated the spread of the fire and produced dense toxic smoke, which is believed to have caused most of the fatalities through smoke inhalation rather than burns.

Escape Routes Under Scrutiny
Investigators are also examining whether emergency evacuation procedures were adequate.
Officials from Bangkok’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said the venue had emergency exits at the rear of the building. However, many patrons reportedly fled toward the toilets instead, becoming trapped as visibility collapsed within seconds.
Rescue workers recovered several bodies from the washroom area, highlighting the confusion that unfolded after the lights went out.
Firefighters who entered the building described finding victims scattered across the venue, many having succumbed to toxic smoke before they could reach an exit.
One musician who escaped said he saw smoke moments before the explosion.
“After the explosion I didn’t see anybody trying to run. Most people were lying on the floor asking for help. I ran from the stage to the exit. It was dark, filled with smoke, and there was almost no oxygen,” he told local media.
Several members of the performing band remain hospitalized, while one performer was among those killed.

Licensing and Safety Compliance Being Reviewed
Authorities have sealed the venue as forensic examinations continue.
Police and building inspectors are reviewing the establishment’s electrical systems, emergency exits, fire alarms, occupancy limits and firefighting equipment to determine whether safety regulations were fully complied with.
Officials confirmed that the venue possessed a valid licence to host live music performances and had passed a routine inspection earlier this year. Investigators are now assessing whether the inspection adequately identified potential hazards or whether conditions inside the venue had changed since then.
National Focus on Nightlife Safety
The disaster has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards at Thailand’s pubs, bars and entertainment venues.
Government officials said a broader review of safety regulations could follow once the investigation is complete, with particular attention expected to focus on electrical installations, interior decorative materials, emergency exits and evacuation planning.
Emergency workers continue to support survivors and assist families awaiting formal identification of victims, while authorities have pledged a thorough investigation to determine accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
