August 17, 2026: A massive rush of devotees at the Ashokdham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district turned deadly early Monday, leaving at least eight women dead and several others injured in a stampede-like incident, officials said.
The incident occurred during the early morning hours when thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple to offer prayers on Shravan Somvaar, considered an important day for devotees of Lord Shiva. The temple, which witnesses a significant increase in footfall during the holy month of Shravan, was particularly crowded on Monday.
Police and district officials said the precise circumstances that led to the deaths were still being ascertained. Initial accounts suggested that an electrical incident may have triggered panic among devotees, while officials also reported that a section of the crowd-control barricading collapsed under intense pressure.
SDPO Shivam Kumar said seven casualties had been reported in the incident. According to him, preliminary information indicated that an electric pole may have fallen at the site, possibly resulting in electrocution and triggering panic among devotees.
“Seven casualties have been reported. It is being said that an electric pole fell there and people were electrocuted, which led to a stampede-like situation,” Kumar told news agency ANI.
The police officer, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions before the circumstances had been properly verified.
“We can tell you the exact reason only after verifying everything,” he said.
The situation reportedly became more difficult to control as the number of devotees increased sharply in the early morning. Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the arrival of two trains around 6.30-6.45 am contributed to a sudden surge in the number of people reaching the temple.
According to the district administration, preparations had been made in anticipation of a large gathering because of the religious significance of the day. However, the sudden increase in the crowd placed additional pressure on the arrangements at the temple premises.
“Arrangements had been made as we had anticipated a large gathering,” the DM said.
He said the crowd pressure eventually caused one side of the barricading to give way, resulting in devotees falling over one another.
“We then came to know that the barricading broke on one side due to the crowd, and people fell on each other. We rushed 10-15 people here immediately,” Kumar said.
The collapse of the barricading appears to have intensified the situation, although officials have not yet established whether it was the primary cause of the deaths or occurred after panic had already spread among the devotees.

The injured were immediately taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Police personnel and district administration officials were deployed at the temple to regulate the movement of devotees, clear congested areas and prevent further panic.
Emergency teams also began assessing the situation at the temple premises as authorities sought to establish the exact sequence of events. Officials are expected to examine the condition of the electrical infrastructure, barricading arrangements and entry and exit routes as part of the inquiry.

The administration is also likely to examine whether the simultaneous arrival of large numbers of devotees from the two trains contributed to the sudden crowd surge and whether the movement of people inside the temple complex was adequately regulated.
Officials said the investigation would determine whether electrocution, the collapse of the barricading, overcrowding or a combination of factors led to the tragedy.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges of managing large religious gatherings, particularly on auspicious days when thousands of devotees arrive within a short period. Authorities typically rely on barricaded queues, controlled entry and exit, police deployment, medical teams and public-address systems to prevent dangerous crowd build-ups.
At Ashokdham Temple, officials continued to monitor the situation after the incident and appealed to devotees to remain calm and follow instructions issued by the police and district administration.
