August 17, 2026: A pre-dawn fire at a hotel in West Bengal’s Tarapith, one of the state’s busiest pilgrimage destinations, killed at least seven people and left several others critically injured on Monday, with most of the victims believed to have been trapped by thick smoke while they slept.

The blaze broke out at a private hotel in Tarapith, in Birbhum district, around 4.30-5 am, when most of the guests were inside their rooms. All seven people who died were pilgrims, according to officials. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The fire reportedly started on the ground floor of Hotel Bideshinii, also referred to in reports as Bideshini or Bidishini, and rapidly spread through the building. The hotel is a four-storey structure located near a pond and a short distance from the Tarapith police station.

What made the blaze particularly dangerous was the speed at which smoke spread through the upper floors. Burning false ceilings, fibreglass and other inflammable material are believed to have generated dense and potentially toxic smoke, leaving sleeping guests with little time to react.

Several occupants who woke up after noticing the fire or smoke reportedly found themselves disoriented as visibility inside the building deteriorated rapidly. Survivors struggled to locate escape routes, while those trapped inside were exposed to intense smoke and heat.

Initial reports from the hospital put the death toll at five, but police later revised the figure to seven. The injured were taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, where several were reported to be in critical condition.

Firefighters from Rampurhat rushed to the hotel after the blaze was reported. Two fire tenders were deployed to fight the flames, while rescue personnel entered the building to evacuate guests trapped inside.

The fire was subsequently brought under control, allowing rescuers to search the premises and remove those who had been unable to escape on their own.

Preliminary indications suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire, although officials have not yet reached a final conclusion. Fire department personnel and police are examining the hotel premises and questioning those associated with the property to establish how the blaze started and how quickly it spread.

The adequacy of fire-safety arrangements at the hotel is also under scrutiny. Initial reports have raised questions over the availability of basic fire-detection and firefighting equipment and whether adequate emergency evacuation arrangements were in place.

Police teams from Tarapith and Rampurhat reached the spot and began collecting evidence as part of the investigation. Officials are also expected to examine the hotel’s electrical system, fire-safety installations, building layout and emergency exits.

The tragedy occurred on the final Monday of the holy month of Shravan, a period when Tarapith sees a substantial increase in the number of pilgrims visiting its famous Kali temple. The surge in religious tourism during Shravan also means that hotels and other accommodation facilities in the temple town often operate at high occupancy.

The timing of the fire proved particularly dangerous because most guests were asleep when the blaze broke out. A fire in the early hours can become especially deadly when smoke spreads rapidly through enclosed corridors and stairways before occupants are fully aware of the danger.

One survivor, Munmun Mondal, described the panic after smoke began filling the hotel.

“Suddenly the entire hotel was engulfed with smoke. We couldn’t breathe and couldn’t find an escape route immediately,” she said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety in hotels and guesthouses operating in major pilgrimage centres, particularly during peak seasons when large numbers of visitors stay in densely packed accommodation.

Authorities continued rescue, relief and investigation operations through the morning as officials assessed the extent of the damage and worked to establish whether lapses in fire prevention, detection or evacuation contributed to the deaths.

The administration is expected to examine the hotel’s compliance with fire-safety norms and determine whether any negligence contributed to the scale of the tragedy.

Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
