On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre seeking its stand on a petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government against the ordinance controlling services in the nation’s capital.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha issued a notice to the central government on Monday. The court further requested that prominent attorney Abhishek Singhvi, who was representing the Delhi government, modify its argument and name the Lieutenant Governor as a party to the lawsuit.
The AAP administration claimed in its argument that it was a “unconstitutional exercise of executive fiat” that sought to “override” the Supreme Court and the fundamental principles of the Constitution.
The Delhi administration has asked for both a temporary stay and a quashing of the legislation.
The termination of 400 specialists’ contracts with the Delhi government was also contested by Abhishek Singhvi, speaking on behalf of the Delhi government.
Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta responded by claiming that employees of the AAP party and wives of MLAs held the positions.
In relation to the dismissal of 437 consultants, the Supreme Court stated that it will give the Centre time to respond.
The matter will be heard on July 17th, the following Monday.
