Rajkummar Rao’s first look as former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the upcoming biopic Dada has sparked a wave of mixed reactions across social media. While many fans praised the actor’s proven acting abilities and expressed excitement for the film, others felt the first-look poster failed to capture Ganguly’s iconic personality and commanding presence.

The makers unveiled the poster on Ganguly’s 54th birthday, recreating one of the most unforgettable moments in Indian cricket history—his shirt-waving celebration from the Lord’s balcony after India’s historic victory in the 2002 NatWest Series final against England.

Rajkummar Rao’s Dada Poster Faces Online Criticism

Soon after the poster was released, social media platforms were flooded with reactions. A significant section of fans criticised the design, calling it underwhelming and lacking the intensity associated with Ganguly’s legendary image.

Several users compared the official artwork to AI-generated images and fan-made posters. Comments ranged from “Official poster backlash button” and “What is this poster, ChatGPT?” to “Even AI could have created a better first look.” Others remarked that fan-made posters appeared more polished and visually appealing than the official release.

One disappointed fan wrote that the poster looked like a school project, while another joked that they could create a better version themselves. Some users also questioned whether the design looked unfinished, with one calling it “AI fan-poster quality.”

Fans Say the Poster Doesn’t Capture Sourav Ganguly’s Aura

Many cricket fans felt the biggest disappointment was the inability to recreate Ganguly’s charisma, confidence and aggressive leadership style.

One social media user commented that although Rajkummar Rao is among the finest actors of his generation, the poster failed to reflect Ganguly’s larger-than-life aura and personality. Another fan, identifying as a long-time admirer of Ganguly, wrote that the first look was one of the weakest biopic posters they had seen and hoped the final film would do justice to the legendary cricketer’s legacy.

For many, the Lord’s balcony celebration represents far more than a sporting moment—it symbolises the fearless new era of Indian cricket under Ganguly’s leadership.

Supporters Back Rajkummar Rao Despite Mixed Reactions

Despite the criticism, several fans came forward in support of Rajkummar Rao. Many pointed out that judging the film solely based on its first-look poster would be premature.

Supporters expressed confidence that the actor’s performance would ultimately win audiences over. Comments such as “Can’t wait,” “All the best, Rajkummar,” and “He will be brilliant as always” reflected the optimism among his fans.

Several industry colleagues also extended their support following the poster’s release.

About Dada: Rajkummar Rao to Play Sourav Ganguly

Dada is being produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg under Luv Films, while acclaimed filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane is directing the biographical drama.

The film chronicles the life and cricketing journey of Sourav Ganguly, widely regarded as one of India’s most influential and transformative cricket captains.

Interestingly, during an interview in 2025, Ganguly himself had said that Rajkummar Rao was the ideal choice to portray him on screen, further raising expectations for the project.

The Historic Lord’s Celebration That Inspired the Poster

The poster recreates Ganguly’s famous celebration following India’s remarkable victory in the 2002 NatWest Series final at Lord’s.

Chasing a daunting target of 326 against England, India got off to a flying start through Ganguly and Virender Sehwag before suffering a dramatic middle-order collapse.

Just when defeat appeared inevitable, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif stitched together a memorable 121-run partnership to revive India’s hopes. Kaif remained unbeaten to guide India to a thrilling two-wicket victory in the final over.

Ganguly’s emotional act of waving his shirt from the Lord’s balcony instantly became one of the most iconic visuals in Indian cricket history, symbolising confidence, aggression and a fearless new generation.

Will Dada Meet Fans’ High Expectations?

Although Rajkummar Rao’s first look has divided audiences, the conversation has only increased curiosity around Dada. Fans remain eager to see whether the actor can successfully bring Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, passion and fearless attitude to life on the big screen.

With Vikramaditya Motwane at the helm and Rajkummar Rao leading the cast, the biopic carries immense expectations. Whether the film lives up to Ganguly’s extraordinary legacy will ultimately be decided when Dada arrives in theatres.
