April 23, 2026 — The Kuki Civil Society Organisation (CSO) Working Committee in Ukhrul has alleged fresh militant attacks on Kuki villages in the district, accusing security forces of failing to respond effectively and protect civilians.
In a letter dated April 23 (Ref: WC/PR34/04/26), addressed to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Director General of Police, and the Superintendent of Police, Ukhrul, the committee reported escalating violence in G. Shongmun and Mongkot Chepu villages.
Attack on G. Shongmun
According to the committee, G. Shongmun village came under heavy attack at around 10:00 PM on April 22. The assault allegedly involved automatic weapons and explosives and was attributed to Tangkhul militants.
Despite the presence of security forces stationed at nearby Sinakeithel, the committee claimed there was no effective response to deter the attackers. Firing reportedly continued toward civilian areas from around 11:00 PM, forcing villagers to flee.
The committee described what it termed as continued “inaction and apparent indifference” toward Kuki civilians in the Litan area and surrounding villages, alleging that such conditions have persisted for over two months. It also cited earlier incidents, including the alleged manhandling of women during shutdowns.

- April 20 (early hours): Children reportedly came under targeted firing.
- April 20 (around 5:30 PM): The residence of the village chief was hit by a sniper shot.

Demands for Action
Expressing concern over the handling of the situation, the committee alleged that law and order responses may be influenced by “dominant narratives” rather than verified ground realities. It urged authorities to clarify their position and outline concrete steps being taken.
The committee listed three key demands:
- Immediate and neutral intervention to ensure civilian safety
- Accountability for any lapses in duty
- Assurance of equal and fair treatment for all communities
“Patience among affected communities is diminishing, and there is little tolerance for continued inaction or ineffective assurances,” the statement said.
