Following the reported assault on a Kuki-Zo village, KIM has demanded an independent judicial inquiry, accountability from security officials, and immediate action to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.

July 5, 2026: Yet another Kuki Zo village came under attacks this evening when armed cadres of the NSCN-Muivah and its proxy faction ZUF-Kamson carried out a barbaric assault on the peaceful residents of Thingkhongjang Village under K. Geljang Sub-Division in Kangpokpi District.
Several civilian homes were deliberately set ablaze, while indiscriminate firing left an innocent woman and a young child seriously injured. The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribes, has issued its strongest possible condemnation of the incident, describing it as “nothing less than an act of terror against innocent people” and “a grave assault on human dignity and the rule of law.”
In its official press release (Reference No. 04/KIM/PR/25-56), issued by its Media Cell, KIM expressed “the strongest possible condemnation and profound outrage” over what it described as a cowardly attack on an unarmed civilian settlement.
Security Forces Under Scrutiny
The incident has raised serious concerns over the effectiveness of the security deployment in the area. KIM noted that the attack allegedly took place despite the presence of the 86th Battalion’s F Company stationed nearby.
“It is beyond comprehension that heavily armed militants could infiltrate the area, unleash violence upon civilians, torch homes, injure women and children, and withdraw without decisive intervention,” the organisation said.
Calling the incident a “monumental security failure,” KIM argued that the episode could not be dismissed as a routine lapse and demanded accountability from the authorities responsible for maintaining security.

Assurances on Village Security Questioned
KIM also criticised the Kangpokpi district administration and the Manipur government, stating that previous assurances regarding the protection of villages had failed to translate into action.
According to the organisation, both the Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Kangpokpi District had repeatedly assured residents that ensuring the security of every village was the administration’s responsibility.
KIM further referred to a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Manipur, under which the District Police had assumed responsibility for village security, allowing Kuki-Zo village volunteers to step back from guarding their own communities.
Today in Thingkhojang village, another attack was reportedly carried out against a Kuki ancestral village, with numerous houses burned down despite the presence of COBRA personnel and Central security forces in the area.

“Those assurances now stand shattered,” KIM said, adding that residents have every right to question how such an attack could occur despite those commitments.
Demand for Judicial Inquiry
The organisation has called for immediate accountability from officials whose alleged negligence or failure of command may have contributed to the incident.
It has also demanded a transparent, impartial and time-bound independent judicial inquiry to establish the sequence of events, determine responsibility for any operational lapses and ensure appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
KIM Criticises Government Response
In a strongly worded statement, KIM said the continued failure to protect civilians was eroding public confidence in both the state and Central governments.
“Repeated assurances are meaningless if they are not matched by decisive action on the ground. Every instance of inaction only deepens public distrust and emboldens those who seek to terrorise defenceless communities,” the statement said.
The organisation added that the people would no longer accept what it described as empty promises, administrative silence or delayed responses while innocent families continue to suffer.
Invoking the principle that “justice delayed is justice denied,” KIM said those entrusted with the constitutional duty of protecting citizens and their property must either fulfil that responsibility or be held fully accountable.
The statement, issued from KIM’s Administrative Centre in Lamka, said the latest incident once again highlights what the organisation described as a continuing pattern of attacks on Kuki-Zo villages and alleged shortcomings in the security apparatus despite prior warnings and formal security arrangements.
Residents and Kuki civil society organisations are now awaiting the response of the Manipur government and security agencies to the latest incident.
