July 6, 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump has found himself at the center of a major World Cup controversy after personally urging FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the one-match suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, a move that ultimately made the American forward eligible for the United States’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun, the United States’ leading scorer at the tournament, was sent off in the 64th minute of the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review upgraded his challenge to serious foul play. The red card carried an automatic one-match suspension under FIFA regulations, ruling him out of the Belgium fixture.

However, following conversations between Trump and Infantino, FIFA announced that Balogun’s suspension would be placed on probation for one year under Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, allowing him to feature in the knockout match. FIFA maintained that the decision was made through its disciplinary process, though the timing of the ruling fueled speculation over political influence.

Trump welcomed the decision on Truth Social, thanking FIFA for “reversing a great injustice,” while the White House also celebrated the ruling.
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Belgium’s football authorities, who questioned the fairness of the process and indicated they were considering legal options. Football pundits and fans also expressed concern that political intervention could undermine the integrity of FIFA’s disciplinary system, while others argued the original red card was excessively harsh and that justice had been served.
The unprecedented reversal has become one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reigniting debate over consistency in officiating, the independence of football’s governing bodies, and the growing intersection of politics and sport. Balogun is now set to lead the U.S. attack against Belgium with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
