October 11: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a major drug consignment in Guwahati, recovering 53.937 kg of methamphetamine tablets, popularly known as WY tablets, with an estimated illicit market value of ₹43 crore. The drugs were ingeniously hidden in specially constructed compartments inside the fuel tanks of two trucks to avoid detection.
The seizure was made on October 6 after the NCB’s Guwahati Zonal Unit acted on specific intelligence and intercepted the vehicles. A thorough search led to the recovery of the concealed consignment and the arrest of two men from Manipur’s Bishnupur district.
Investigators suspect that the methamphetamine originated in Myanmar, raising the possibility of an organised cross-border trafficking operation. The NCB is now attempting to identify the people behind the consignment, including suppliers, intended recipients, financiers and those responsible for transporting the drugs. The probe is expected to focus on uncovering the wider network and its operational links.

Suspected Brown Sugar Seized in Manipur
In a separate operation in Manipur, a joint team of the CDO-Bishnupur and Moirang Police Station seized approximately 3.5 kg of suspected brown sugar during frisking and checking at Tiddim Road in Okshobung on October 10.
The team arrested Md. Abir Khan, 46, son of Md. Siraj Ahamat. He is a resident of Oinam Sawombung Makha Leikai in Imphal West and currently resides in Tuibong. A Hero Destini 125 two-wheeler was also confiscated during the operation.
The two operations point to the continuing challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing narcotics trafficking in the Northeast. Investigators in the Guwahati case are examining the suspected Myanmar connection, while further details about the Manipur seizure may emerge as the investigation progresses. Whether the two cases have any connection has not been established.
