A viral photograph showing an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has triggered widespread outrage, prompting Israeli authorities to open an investigation into the incident.
The image, which spread rapidly across social media on April 19, appears to show a uniformed Israeli soldier attacking the head of a crucified Jesus statue that had become dislodged from its cross in the predominantly Maronite Christian village of Debl, near the Israeli border. The incident reportedly occurred during ongoing Israeli military operations targeting Hezbollah-linked infrastructure, despite a ceasefire that took effect around April 17.
The photograph drew swift condemnation from Christian communities in Lebanon and abroad, with many describing the act as a desecration of a sacred religious symbol.
Following the completion of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.

Maroun Nassif, deputy head of the Debl municipality, condemned what he called a “shameful act” that had deeply offended the religious sentiments of local residents. Villagers said the statue held significant spiritual importance and voiced concern that continued Israeli troop presence had limited access to the site to fully assess the damage.
The image quickly gained millions of views on social media platforms, sparking international backlash. Activists, commentators and religious voices denounced the act as an attack on Christian heritage, while calls for accountability intensified online.
In response to the backlash, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the authenticity of the photograph and said the soldier’s conduct was being treated with “great severity.”
In a statement, the IDF said the action was inconsistent with the standards expected of its troops and that the case is under formal investigation by the Northern Command and military police. Israeli officials said disciplinary action would be taken based on the findings.
The military also said it was working to assist the local community in restoring the damaged statue, while stressing that Israeli operations in southern Lebanon are directed at Hezbollah infrastructure and not civilian or religious sites.
The incident has added fresh strain to an already fragile post-ceasefire environment in southern Lebanon, with the investigation being closely watched amid broader concerns over religious sensitivities and escalating regional tensions.
