April 20, 2026: US-Iran tensions surged sharply over the weekend after American forces fired on and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman, marking the first direct maritime interception under Washington’s blockade near the Strait of Hormuz.

The dramatic operation, involving the US Navy destroyer USS Spruance and US Marines, has triggered fresh fears of military escalation, with Tehran calling the seizure an “act of armed piracy,” vowing retaliation, and suspending participation in a planned second round of peace talks with Washington in Islamabad.

What The US Said

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the Iranian-flagged vessel Touska as it transited the north Arabian Sea en route to Bandar Abbas. In a post on X, CENTCOM said US forces issued repeated warnings over six hours, informing the vessel it was violating the US naval blockade.

“When Touska’s crew failed to comply, Spruance directed the vessel to evacuate its engine room before disabling its propulsion by firing several rounds from the destroyer’s 5-inch MK 45 gun,” CENTCOM said. US Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit later boarded the vessel, which remains in US custody.

CENTCOM also released video footage showing USS Spruance issuing warnings before opening fire on the vessel.

President Donald Trump later defended the operation on Truth Social, saying the nearly 900-foot cargo ship attempted to breach the blockade and ignored “fair warning” to stop.

“Our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room,” Trump said, adding the Touska is under US Treasury sanctions over alleged prior illegal activity and that American forces are inspecting its cargo.

Tehran condemned the seizure as a violation of the ceasefire and warned of imminent retaliation. Iranian officials also announced they would not participate in the second round of US-Iran peace talks scheduled in Islamabad, casting further doubt over the fragile diplomatic process.

Blockade At Hormuz

The confrontation comes amid mounting uncertainty over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which roughly a fifth of global oil supplies pass in peacetime. Confusion persisted Monday after Iran briefly indicated commercial shipping could resume transit, only to halt nearly all traffic less than 24 hours later.

With the two-week ceasefire due to expire on April 22, tensions have intensified further after Trump threatened to destroy Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, if Tehran does not agree to a deal soon.

Iran, however, has rejected claims it has agreed to major US demands, including ending its nuclear programme or transferring stockpiles of enriched uranium to Washington.
