June 15, 2026: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s hill districts on Monday morning after suspected NSCN (I-M) militants allegedly attacked a Kuki village in Kangpokpi district, injuring three villagers and raising fresh concerns over the effectiveness of security measures in the conflict-hit region. Kuki Inpi Manipur has condemed the incident.
According to local reports, heavily armed militants opened fire on Leilon Vaiphei village before hurling bombs at residential areas and fleeing into the surrounding hills and forests. The attack took place despite the presence of security forces stationed nearby, prompting sharp criticism from Kuki civil society groups.
Three villagers sustained injuries in the assault and were rushed for medical treatment at the RIMS, Imphal. The condition of the injured was not immediately known.
“We have ground reports indicating that the attack was carried out by NSCN (I-M) militants,” said Janghaolun Haokip, spokesperson of Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body representing Kuki-Zo civil society organisations.
He expressed concern over what he described as repeated security lapses, questioning why authorities had failed to prevent such attacks or apprehend those responsible.
“The security forces have not been able to prevent these recurrent attacks or nab the attackers. People continue to live in fear while armed groups operate with apparent impunity,” he said.
The latest incident comes amid heightened security alerts across the hill districts following a series of similar attacks in recent weeks. Several Kuki-Zo villagers have reportedly been killed and dozens of houses set ablaze in recurring episodes of violence, deepening anxiety among local communities.

Kuki Inpi Condemns Attack
In a statement, Kuki Inpi Manipur condemned the assault, asserting that it had been carried out by NSCN (I-M) militants and its alleged proxy outfit, ZUF-K.
“Kuki Inpi strongly condemns the bombing of Leilon Vaiphei on June 15, 2026, by NSCN-IM and its proxy outfit ZUF-K terrorists,” the organisation said.
“This violent act has once again endangered innocent lives, damaged properties, and shattered the peace and security of the people. Such attacks against civilian areas are unacceptable, inhuman, and a direct threat to the rule of law.”
The organisation questioned how long civilians would be expected to endure fear and insecurity while armed groups continued to operate freely.
“The people of Leilon Vaiphei and the surrounding areas cannot be expected to live under fear while armed groups continue to operate with apparent freedom and impunity. We question how much longer the government forces will continue to give leeway to those responsible for creating terror, insecurity, and destruction,” it said.
Warning that inaction would only embolden perpetrators, Kuki Inpi urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly.
“Silence, delay, or inaction will only embolden the perpetrators and deepen public anger and mistrust. We therefore demand immediate and decisive action from the Government and security forces to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved in the attack.”
“The safety of civilians must be treated as the highest priority, and adequate security measures must be put in place to prevent any further violence. Justice must not be delayed. Peace cannot be restored without accountability,” the statement added.
