Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways, bringing an end to one of the longest and most successful coach-franchise partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In an official statement, the franchise said the decision was made after a series of open and respectful discussions between Fleming and the CSK management. The team described the separation as one based on “respect and gratitude” while acknowledging Fleming’s immense contribution to the franchise over nearly two decades.
Stephen Fleming’s Remarkable CSK Legacy
Stephen Fleming first joined Chennai Super Kings as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, CSK became one of the league’s most successful franchises.
During his tenure, the team achieved:
- Five IPL titles
- Two Champions League T20 titles
- 12 IPL playoff appearances
- 10 IPL final appearances
Fleming played a key role in building CSK’s reputation for consistency, stability, and a strong team-first culture.
Recent Struggles Led to Increased Scrutiny
Despite his impressive record, Fleming faced criticism in recent seasons as Chennai Super Kings failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs in each of the last three campaigns following their championship-winning season in 2023.
Several observers also questioned his coaching legacy, pointing out that all five IPL trophies came during MS Dhoni’s captaincy. Critics argued that the franchise had struggled to adapt to the rapidly evolving style of modern T20 cricket.
Fleming also served as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC). However, neither franchise has won a title under his leadership, with Texas Super Kings finishing at the bottom of the MLC standings this season.
CSK Management Pays Tribute to Fleming
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath thanked Fleming for his years of dedication and leadership, describing him as the heartbeat of the franchise’s coaching setup.
She said his contribution helped shape the team’s identity, vision, and long-standing pursuit of excellence, adding that he would always remain an important part of the Super Kings legacy.
Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan also praised Fleming for building a culture based on consistency, humility, and teamwork. He credited the former New Zealand captain with bringing out the best in players and influencing the franchise both on and off the field.
Stephen Fleming’s Farewell Message
Reflecting on his departure, Fleming described his 18-year journey with Chennai Super Kings as the greatest privilege of his coaching career.
He expressed gratitude for the unforgettable victories, the challenges the team overcame together, and the memories created during his time with the franchise. Fleming added that CSK would always hold a special place in his heart and said he would continue supporting the team in the years ahead.
