July 13: An Assam Rifles soldier was killed and four others were injured after their vehicle was hit by a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district on Monday, prompting a massive counter-insurgency operation in the area.
The blast occurred near Sukhovi village, close to an Assam Rifles training centre and not far from the Nagaland-Assam border, when a Bolero SUV carrying security personnel was passing through the area.
According to security officials, the powerful explosion struck the vehicle while the soldiers were on operational duty. One jawan succumbed to his injuries, while the four wounded personnel were rushed to a nearby hospital. Their condition is being closely monitored, officials said.
Soon after the attack, Assam Rifles, Nagaland Police and other security agencies launched an intensive search-and-cordon operation to trace those responsible. Additional reinforcements have been deployed, and the blast site has been sealed for forensic examination. Bomb disposal and investigation teams are also collecting evidence to determine the type of explosive used and how it was triggered.

Militants Suspected
While no militant outfit has claimed responsibility, investigators suspect the attack may have been carried out by insurgent groups active in the region. Security agencies are examining whether cadres linked to the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) [NSCN-IM], the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) or other underground outfits were involved.
Officials cautioned that it is too early to attribute responsibility, and the investigation is focused on gathering forensic and intelligence evidence before drawing conclusions.
The incident is reported to be the second attack targeting Assam Rifles personnel within a week, raising fresh concerns over renewed militant activity in parts of the Northeast despite ongoing peace initiatives.

Strategic Area
The attack took place in a strategically sensitive zone near the interstate border with Assam, an area where security forces regularly conduct counter-insurgency patrols and area domination exercises.
Although insurgency-related violence in Nagaland has declined considerably over the past decade due to ceasefire agreements and peace negotiations, militant groups continue to retain pockets of influence in remote areas. Security experts note that IEDs remain one of the preferred weapons of insurgents, enabling them to target security convoys before escaping through the region’s hilly and forested terrain.
Probe Underway
Senior security officials have condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Intelligence agencies are reviewing CCTV footage, electronic surveillance inputs and local intelligence while questioning potential witnesses in an effort to identify the perpetrators.
The identity of the slain Assam Rifles soldier has not yet been officially released pending notification of his family.
The latest attack serves as a reminder that, despite significant improvements in the security situation across the Northeast, militant threats persist. Security forces remain on high alert as operations continue to hunt down those behind the deadly blast.
