The African Stage of the FIDE World Schools Team Championship 2026 marked another significant milestone in FIDE’s mission to expand scholastic chess across every continent. Organized as the African continental qualifier, the event brought together some of the strongest school teams from across the continent, with participants competing not only for regional honors but also for coveted qualification places in the FIDE World Schools Team Championship Finals.
Beginning in 2026, the WSTC adopted a continental qualifying format. Four continental stages (Asia, Africa, Americas, Europe) are held in spring/summer 2026, with top finishers qualifying to a year-end Grand Final. The schedule announced: Asia (April 7–10 in Almaty, KAZ), Africa (July 6–11 in Cape Town, RSA), Americas (Aug 11–16 in Costa Rica), and a Europe stage to follow. FIDE President Dvorkovich noted that the initiative targets youth engagement worldwide, especially expanding into Africa and the Americas.

The tournament highlighted the rapid development of school chess in Africa, where national federations have increasingly invested in youth programs, producing stronger players and more competitive school teams each year. The African qualifier showcased both established chess nations and emerging federations, emphasizing the continent’s growing influence in international scholastic chess.
High-Level Team Competition
The African qualifier featured intense matches throughout the tournament. Unlike individual competitions where one outstanding player can dominate, team championships reward balanced performances across every board.
Captains and coaches carefully planned board orders, while players needed to balance aggressive play with team strategy depending on the match situation. Close contests were often decided by a single board result, demonstrating the depth of competition among the participating schools.
Participation: 26 teams from 22 African countries. Teams included Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ghana, Tanzania, etc. The event was hosted by the South African Chess Federation and supported by Freedom Holding Corp (FIDE partner).
The Swiss format ensured that teams faced opponents with similar scores as the tournament progressed, leading to increasingly competitive encounters in the later rounds.
