New Delhi: At least 20 people lost their lives and several others were rescued after a devastating fire broke out at a hotel in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning, triggering a large-scale emergency response.
The blaze erupted at around 8:50 a.m. in the basement restaurant of the five-storey Micasa Inn Hotel, located in the congested Hauz Rani area. Fire officials said multiple firefighting units, including water tenders, water bowsers, and quick-response vehicles, were rushed to the scene after a distress call was received.
Authorities believe nearly 40 people were inside the building when the fire broke out. Rescue operations were launched immediately as thick smoke engulfed the hotel, trapping many occupants inside.
Dramatic visuals from the scene showed desperate guests jumping from upper floors in an attempt to escape the flames and dense smoke. Firefighters and emergency personnel worked for several hours to evacuate those trapped inside and bring the blaze under control.

Chef Recounts Terrifying Moments
Kesar Singh, a chef employed at the hotel’s basement restaurant, recalled the horrifying moments leading up to the tragedy. He said he was preparing to begin work when he attempted to switch on an electric stove.
“Suddenly flames flared up. Within moments, I realised that the hotel was already on fire,” Singh said. “I immediately alerted my assistant and others that the building was burning.”
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the blaze and whether fire safety norms were adequately followed at the establishment.
The incident is among the deadliest fire tragedies reported in the national capital in recent years.
