July 27, 2006: A 19-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district after reportedly becoming distressed over her performance in the NEET re-examination, police said.

The deceased, identified as Ankita Sangle, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Jalalpur village in Karjat taluka on Saturday evening. According to police, she was alone at the time of the incident as her parents and elder brother had travelled to Pandharpur to participate in the Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage.

Family members who visited the house at around 5.30 pm discovered her and immediately alerted the police.

Karjat Police Station Inspector Hanuman Gaikwad said a handwritten suicide note was recovered from the spot. Preliminary investigation suggests Ankita had been deeply upset over her performance in the NEET re-examination and believed she had failed to achieve the score required for admission to a medical college.

According to police, Ankita had been preparing for the highly competitive entrance examination through online coaching classes. In the note, she allegedly apologised to her parents and brother, saying she was unable to fulfil their expectations. She also reportedly described herself as an “average student” and expressed disappointment with her academic performance.

Police said Ankita had secured 166 marks in the NEET re-examination, which was below the reported qualifying cut-off of 177 marks, leaving her devastated.

The Karjat police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated an investigation. Officials said they are examining all aspects of the case, including the contents of the suicide note, before drawing any final conclusions.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the immense academic pressure faced by students preparing for competitive entrance examinations such as NEET, where even a small margin can determine admission prospects. Mental health experts have repeatedly urged students and families to seek emotional support and counselling during periods of examination-related stress.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide or overwhelming emotional distress, reaching out to trusted family members, friends, or a qualified mental health professional can make a significant difference. Early support is available and can help.
