US Strikes Iran’s Military Sites After Attack on Cargo Ship

US Central Command described the strikes as a "powerful response" to what it called Iran's violation of the ceasefire, while urging continued protection of commercial shipping in the Gulf.

Iran denied any admission of responsibility for the maritime attack, even as its Revolutionary Guards claimed retaliatory strikes on US positions in the Gulf following the American operation.

June 27, 2026 — The United States on Saturday launched airstrikes against Iranian military installations after accusing Tehran of violating the recently brokered ceasefire by attacking a commercial cargo vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

IN response, Iran’s IRGC says it has struck U.S. military positions in the region after today’s U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets.

The strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which described the operation as a “powerful response” to what it called an unprovoked attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely on June 25.

In a statement, CENTCOM alleged that Iran used a one-way attack drone to strike the vessel while it was sailing along the Omani coast after exiting the Strait of Hormuz.

“The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire,” the US military said. “Iran’s dangerous behaviour undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through this vital international trade corridor.”

The US military said it continues to provide “safe passage coordination and support” for commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies are transported.

“The US military remains present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and remain in full force and effect,” CENTCOM added.

The command also released a 37-second video showing footage of the strikes. However, it did not disclose the exact locations targeted.

Iranian state television reported that an explosion was heard late Friday near Taherouyeh pier in the southern port city of Sirik. Citing an unnamed military source, the broadcaster said the blast was caused by the impact of a projectile, though Iranian authorities did not immediately acknowledge any US attack.

JD Vance Warns Tehran

Following the military action, US Vice President JD Vance warned Iran against carrying out further attacks, saying any future violations would invite a stronger response.

“Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it. If they have disagreements about how the memorandum of understanding is being applied, they can pick up the phone. But violence will be met with violence,” Vance wrote on X.

Iran Claims Retaliatory Action

Shortly after the US strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had launched attacks on American positions in the Gulf region.

“If the aggression is repeated, our response will be broader than this,” the Guards said in a statement carried by Iranian state television on Telegram.

The claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate confirmation from US officials regarding any attacks on American facilities.

Trump Accuses Iran of Violating Ceasefire

US President Donald Trump condemned Iran’s drone strike on the cargo vessel, calling it a “foolish” breach of the ceasefire agreement.

“One of the drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive cargo-carrying ship, while three others were shot down,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our ceasefire agreement,” he added.

Fragile Truce Under Strain

A ceasefire between the United States and Iran came into effect on April 8 following months of military confrontation across the Middle East. Although the agreement significantly reduced hostilities, sporadic violence has continued, including attacks on commercial shipping and periodic military exchanges.

On June 17, President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending nearly four months of conflict. The agreement called for an immediate halt to military operations, including in Lebanon, and committed both countries to negotiating a comprehensive peace settlement within 60 days.

The latest exchange of strikes has raised fresh concerns about the durability of the ceasefire and the security of international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that carries a substantial share of global energy supplies.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
