Rescuers are battling mud, debris and wreckage in Nepal’s worst-hit northern districts as the death toll rises. India has rushed 10 tonnes of relief and medical supplies to support the rescue operation.

August 27, 2026: At least 133 Indian pilgrims travelling to Kailash Mansarovar are among hundreds still missing after catastrophic flash floods devastated Nepal’s northern border region, killing at least 157 people and wiping out entire settlements.
Nepal Police said 157 bodies had been recovered as rescuers continued digging through mud, debris and wreckage in a desperate search for survivors and victims. Authorities were also evacuating families from areas threatened by further flooding.
The flash floods swept through the Bhote Koshi River around 9 a.m. local time on August 26 after floodwaters surged across the border from the Tibetan side. Rasuwa and Dhading districts, which border Tibet, along with Nuwakot, were among the worst affected.

Earlier, Nepal’s Tourism Ministry reported that around 403 tourists, including 341 foreign nationals, were unaccounted for in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. The missing foreigners included at least 142 Indians, as well as nationals of Australia, Britain, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea and the United States.

India has offered immediate humanitarian assistance, with the Indian Air Force deploying a transport aircraft carrying 10 tonnes of relief materials and medical supplies to support Nepal’s rescue and relief operations.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah pledged to deploy the government’s full resources to assist victims and survivors. “The pain and loss you have suffered is not small. But I want to assure you that you are not alone in this difficult time—the state is with you with all its means and resources,” Shah said in a social media statement.
Shah also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his condolences and offer of assistance, describing India’s response as a reflection of the enduring friendship between the two countries.
