June 18, 2026: A major diplomatic breakthrough was announced on Wednesday as US President Donald Trump and Iran signed an agreement designed to end months of conflict in the Middle East, raising hopes for regional stability and the reopening of key global trade routes.
The agreement was signed during a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit.
Announcing the development on X, Macron wrote: “President Trump signed tonight at Versailles the agreement between Iran and the United States. This agreement paves the way for lasting peace and allows the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. It is an important step in the right direction for our compatriots and will soon help reduce energy prices.”
Iran Confirms Signing of Agreement
Iran also confirmed that the deal had been signed. According to the state-run IRNA news agency, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, “The text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was finalised with the signatures of the presidents. Now it is time to test the implementation of the agreement.”
The formal signing had originally been scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday, though Tehran indicated that the Geneva meeting will still proceed as planned.
With the memorandum now signed, Washington and Tehran will have 60 days to negotiate the terms of a final agreement.

US Releases Text of Iran Deal
Earlier on Wednesday, US officials publicly read out the wording of the agreement during a conference call, following growing criticism over the lack of transparency surrounding the deal, which Trump first announced on Sunday.
Officially titled the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the document calls for an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”
Under the agreement, the United States has pledged to lift its naval blockade of Iran within 30 days. During that period, maritime traffic is expected to return to pre-war levels. The document also states that US forces will withdraw from the vicinity of Iran within 30 days of a final settlement being reached.
In return, Iran has committed to using its best efforts to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels and to refrain from charging transit fees for 60 days.
The signing marks a significant milestone in ending a conflict that had lasted approximately 110 days, beginning after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28.
