April 17: In a decisive verdict, tribal voters in Tripura have handed a resounding mandate to the Tipra Motha Party, which is set to retain control of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), dealing a major blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to final results declared by the State Election Commission on Friday, Tipra Motha secured 24 of the 28 seats, while the BJP managed just four. Other parties, including CPI(M), Congress and IPFT, failed to win a single seat.
Counting, which began at 8 am across 17 centres under tight security, saw Tipra Motha take an early lead and maintain its momentum throughout. The party not only retained its strongholds but also expanded its footprint, signalling a strong consolidation of tribal support around its agenda of greater autonomy and development focused on indigenous communities.
The outcome marks a significant setback for the BJP, which had mounted an aggressive campaign to wrest control of the council. In contrast, Tipra Motha’s performance reflects growing resonance of its core demand for safeguarding tribal rights and securing a long-term political solution for the Tiprasa people.

Compared to the 2021 TTAADC polls, where Tipra Motha (then allied with INPT) had won 18 seats and the BJP nine, the latest results show a substantial gain for the regional party, achieved this time while contesting independently.
Polling for the 28-member council was held on April 12 and recorded a high voter turnout of 83.52 per cent, with 173 candidates in the fray. Officials said the counting process was conducted as per protocol, beginning with VVPAT slips followed by EVM tallies, and remained peaceful under multi-layered security arrangements.
Tipra Motha leaders termed the victory a strong endorsement of their vision, saying the mandate reflects the aspirations of the tribal electorate. With the numbers firmly in its favour, the party is set to form the council again, with the new leadership expected to take charge soon.
The results are being viewed as a clear message from Tripura’s tribal belt, where local identity and regional demands appear to have outweighed national political narratives.
