Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the projects in the Assembly on Thursday, saying the proposed Olympic City would be developed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.
The Olympic City will feature Olympic-standard arenas, modern sporting equipment, a high-performance training centre, sports science and sports medicine facilities, along with residential accommodation for athletes and coaches.

The government’s objective is to create an integrated sporting hub capable of hosting international competitions while providing athletes with the infrastructure and training needed to compete at the highest level.
“World-class, Olympics-standard infrastructure and training structure with residential facility will be built. This will help Chennai host international events and to churn out Olympians,” Vijay said.

The Chief Minister also announced plans for a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai, designed to host races ranging from Formula 1 to Formula 4.
The project will focus not only on racing but also on developing young motorsport talent by providing training, competitive opportunities and a pathway to national and international championships.
“Establishing world-class motor vehicle car racing arenas will provide opportunities for tourism, special vehicle manufacturing industries, employment, and economic development,” Vijay said.
The announcement comes as India explores the possibility of bringing Formula 1 back after a long absence. In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports constituted a task force to examine the development of motorsport in the country, with the stated objective of facilitating Formula 1’s return by 2028.
India last hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida in 2013.
