Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar announces retirement in a heartfelt post on social media
Dipa Karmakar, India’s first-ever female gymnast to participate in the Olympics, declared her retirement from the sport on October 07, Monday. In a heartfelt post on a social media platform, Dipa elaborated on the decision and suggested that she may pursue a coaching or mentoring position in the future. Dipa’s decision comes months after her failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
“After a lot of thinking, I have made the decision to retire from gymnastics. This decision wasn’t easy for me, but now feels like the right time. Gymnastics has been a huge part of my life, and I am grateful for every moment—the highs, the lows, and everything in between,” Dipa Karmakar, 31, said in a statement.

In her first Olympic Games, Dipa aimed for the big reward. In Rio, she executed the extremely difficult Produnova vault, a risky vault in gymnastics, and placed fourth in the vault final with a total score of 15.066. This performance came within 0.15 points of winning a bronze medal, leaving the entire nation in awe of the historic achievement.
