New Delhi, October 30: The INDIA bloc has postponed its planned symbolic ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar by a day after continuous rain disrupted preparations for the event in the national capital. The programme, originally scheduled for Friday at 3.30 pm, will now be held at the same time on Saturday at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence at 10, Rajaji Marg.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the INDIA Bloc proceedings, with Kharge moving the symbolic impeachment motion and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi delivering the concluding address. Leaders from various INDIA bloc constituents will also speak, with one representative from each party expected to participate.

The programme was finalised at a INDIA bloc preparatory meeting on Thursday attended by senior Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal, besides Meira Kumar. Opposition representatives included Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien, Samajwadi Party’s Harendra Malik, JMM’s Mahua Maji and CPI(M)’s John Brittas. Invitations have been sent to INDIA bloc MPs.
The proposed gathering is part of the INDIA Bloc’s escalating campaign against Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of failing to address concerns over voter-list revisions and have demanded the CEC’s resignation.
The Congress has also alleged that it was denied permission to hold the programme earlier, accusing the government of attempting to suppress dissent. The opposition has described the exercise as a public demonstration against what it calls the erosion of electoral integrity and alleged ‘vote chori’.
The symbolic proceedings will have no constitutional authority to remove the CEC. Under the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only through a parliamentary process similar to that applicable to a Supreme Court judge.
The Saturday event will precede a larger opposition mobilisation at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The INDIA bloc plans to use the rally to intensify its campaign against alleged electoral malpractice and demand greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission.
