CoTU claimed the prolonged blockades have disrupted the movement of food, fuel, medicines and other essential commodities, driving up prices and affecting daily life across parts of Manipur.

June 28, 2027: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Centre and the Manipur government, demanding the removal of all unauthorised checkpoints and gates along National Highways and inter-state highways passing through Kangpokpi district.
In a press statement issued on Friday following a joint meeting with several civil society organisations (CSOs) in the district, CoTU called for the immediate restoration of free movement for vehicles transporting essential commodities, medicines, fuel and other daily necessities.
The organisation alleged that road transport, which it described as the lifeline of the state’s economy, has remained severely disrupted for over a month due to blockades and unauthorised checkpoints allegedly set up by Kacha Naga groups in Manipur. According to CoTU, the restrictions have caused widespread hardship for people across the state, particularly residents of Kangpokpi district.

Claiming that repeated appeals to the authorities have failed to restore normal movement, CoTU demanded that the state government, in coordination with the Centre and security agencies, dismantle all unauthorised checkpoints and ensure unrestricted access to the highways within 48 hours. The deadline expires at midnight on June 29.
The organisation warned that if its demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, the Kuki-Zo community would be compelled to launch what it termed “appropriate and pre-emptive democratic measures” to safeguard the rights, security and interests of the public.

CoTU further said that any untoward incident resulting from the continued inaction of the authorities would be the responsibility of the Manipur government and the concerned agencies.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting public interests, the committee urged both the Central and State governments to intervene immediately and restore normalcy on the highways to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
The blockades have disrupted traffic on National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur Road), Manipur’s principal supply route, along with other highway stretches passing through Naga-dominated areas. The prolonged restrictions have delayed the movement of trucks carrying food grains, LPG cylinders, fuel, medicines and other essential commodities, contributing to shortages and a spike in retail prices across several parts of the state.
