With the April 22 ceasefire deadline looming, Iran’s top negotiator hits back hard at Donald Trump. Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf says Washington is pushing a “table of surrender” and vows Iran is ready to reveal powerful new options if diplomacy fails under pressure.

April 21, 2026 — Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated sharply ahead of a critical diplomatic deadline, as Iran’s parliamentary speaker and senior negotiator Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf accused President Donald Trump of sabotaging negotiations through threats, military pressure and repeated violations of a fragile ceasefire, warning that Tehran would not negotiate “under coercion or surrender.”

In a strongly worded post on X, Ghalibaf said Washington was attempting to turn the ongoing diplomatic process into what he called a “table of surrender,” insisting Iran would reject any talks conducted under intimidation. He warned that Tehran had spent the past two weeks preparing to play “new cards on the battlefield” should tensions intensify further, signaling that Iran could respond militarily if diplomacy collapses.

His remarks came as pressure mounted ahead of the April 22 deadline tied to a precarious two-week ceasefire brokered amid heightened regional hostilities. The ceasefire, seen as a narrow window for diplomacy, now hangs in the balance as negotiators prepare for a pivotal next round of indirect talks in Islamabad.

Adding to the tensions, Trump issued a stark warning that failure to achieve a breakthrough could trigger renewed conflict. Speaking to PBS News, the US president said the consequences of diplomatic failure could be immediate and severe.

“If something doesn’t happen, lots of bombs start going off,” Trump said, underscoring the risks surrounding the talks.

In a separate phone interview on The John Fredericks Show, Trump struck a more combative tone, expressing confidence Iran would eventually return to negotiations, while threatening unprecedented consequences if it refused.

“Well, they’re going to negotiate, and if they don’t, they’re going to see problems like they’ve never seen before,” Trump said.

He framed the standoff largely around Iran’s nuclear ambitions, reiterating Washington’s red line that Tehran must never obtain a nuclear weapon.

“Hopefully they’ll make a fair deal and they’ll build their country back up, but when they do it they will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “They’ll have no access to, no chance of having a nuclear weapon. And we can’t allow that to happen.”

Trump went further, defending earlier US military actions against Iran as unavoidable.

“And I have to say we had no choice in Iran. It wasn’t like we had a choice. We had to do it,” he said.

The exchange of threats has cast a shadow over the upcoming Islamabad talks, which were expected to focus on extending the ceasefire, reducing military activity and reopening a pathway toward a broader understanding between Tehran and Washington.

Iranian officials have repeatedly maintained they will continue diplomacy, but only on terms of mutual respect and without external pressure. Ghalibaf’s warning suggests Tehran is attempting to project both diplomatic resolve and military readiness as leverage ahead of negotiations.

Analysts say the coming 48 hours could prove decisive. If the ceasefire holds and talks progress, the current crisis could ease. But if the truce collapses or either side escalates militarily, the region could face a dangerous new phase of confrontation.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
