The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has commenced the PhD admission process. Interested candidates can submit their applications for PhD programmes in 36 subjects until July 1 through the university’s official admission portal. Applicants seeking admission to the doctoral programmes must complete and submit the online application form before the closing date.
The university stated that admissions will be carried out in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2022. As per these guidelines, candidates will be considered for admission under multiple categories.
Applicants can seek admission to PhD programmes through four categories :
- UGC-NET qualified candidates with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
- UGC-NET qualified candidates eligible for Assistant Professorship and PhD admission
- UGC-NET qualified candidates eligible only for PhD admission and candidates applying through the university’s entrance examination.
Requirements
Selected candidates will be required to complete the prescribed coursework at IGNOU Headquarters in New Delhi. The university has also clarified that research scholars must maintain at least 80% attendance during their coursework. Students who fail to meet the required attendance may face difficulties in the further admission process.

How Can I Apply ?
The entire application process will be conducted online. Candidates must first register on the university’s admission portal, after which they can complete the application form, upload the necessary documents, and submit the required fee. The application fee for PhD admissions has been set at ₹2,000, which can be paid through online payment modes. Applicants are advised to review all information carefully before final submission of the application form.
