In Mumbai: India’s reigning National Champion, Grandmaster P. Iniyan, delivered a magnificent performance to capture the 360 ONE Global Chess Festival 2026 Masters title, finishing clear first with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The top seed sealed the championship with a commanding victory over IM P. Ajay Santhosh in the final round, capping off one of the most impressive performances seen in Indian chess this year.
A Champion’s March

The 2573-rated Grandmaster started the tournament with five consecutive victories, defeating a strong field and building a crucial lead over his rivals. Among his notable wins was an impressive fourth-round triumph over GM Boris Savchenko, which helped him maintain sole leadership.
His winning streak was halted in Round 6 by IM Soham Kamotra, but the setback proved only temporary. Displaying the resilience and composure characteristic of elite champions, Iniyan bounced back immediately with a convincing victory in Round 7 and followed it with a solid draw against IM Harsh Suresh in Round 8, entering the final day with a full-point advantage.
Finishing with Authority
Although a draw in the last round would have been sufficient to secure the title, Iniyan chose the path of ambition rather than caution. Facing Hyderabad’s IM P. Ajay Santhosh, he gradually increased the pressure and converted his positional edge into a full point, securing the championship in style.
The victory highlighted not only his deep preparation and excellent endgame technique but also his ability to recover strongly from adversity. His performance throughout the tournament further reinforced his reputation as one of India’s most dependable elite Grandmasters.
