New Delhi/ October 11: Delhi Police have detained four men in connection with a widely circulated social media video that allegedly shows a protester being assaulted on DDU Marg in central Delhi, under the jurisdiction of Kamla Market police station. The action follows widespread online outrage over the footage, which has been shared by political organisations, student groups and social media users seeking the identification and arrest of those allegedly involved.
The video has circulated extensively on social media, including through accounts associated with the Indian Youth Congress, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Several other accounts have shared posters identifying the men allegedly seen in the footage and demanding action against them.
According to a police communication, no formal complaint had been received from the alleged victim or any individual or organisation at the time of the action. Police nevertheless initiated efforts to trace the men after receiving information that they might leave the Delhi-NCR region overnight and go underground.
Citing the rapid spread of the video and the possibility that the suspects could abscond, officers discreetly traced the four men and took them into custody. Police said further action would be taken during the day, as required.
The four men have been identified as Raman Saini, 50; Vivekanand alias Vivek, 32; Kapil Kumar, 27; and Ravinder Singh alias Govind Hindu, 35. Their detention marks a significant development in a case that has drawn attention amid heightened tensions surrounding the recent CJP protests in the capital.
The circulation of the footage has fuelled demands for a prompt investigation into the alleged assault, with social media users calling for the men shown in the video to be identified and held accountable. The incident has also intensified scrutiny of the police response to allegations of violence against protesters during the demonstrations.

Minor girls are reportedly being harassed in Delhi, and this is absolutely unacceptable.
When Section 144 is in force and police personnel are present, who gives anyone the right to intimidate people or engage in hooliganism?
The law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of their political affiliations or influence. It is the police’s duty to protect citizens, ensure women’s safety, and maintain law and order not allow anyone to act above the law.
Those responsible for harassment and creating a disturbance must face appropriate legal action. No one should be allowed to threaten the safety and dignity of girls or disturb public peace with impunity.

The absence of a formal complaint had not prevented police from taking preliminary action, according to the communication. However, the precise circumstances of the alleged assault, the identities of those involved in the incident and the sequence of events leading up to it will need to be established through investigation.
It was not immediately clear whether the alleged victim had been contacted by investigators, whether the four men had been formally arrested or whether any specific charges had been filed against them. Detention does not establish guilt, and the allegations against the men will need to be tested through due process.
Police said further action would be taken as required. The investigation is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the evidence available, including the widely circulated video.
