India is set to make a powerful statement on the global chess stage after five of its finest players secured qualification for the inaugural Total Chess World Championship Tour Pilot Event, scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from November 10 to 21, 2026. The tournament marks the beginning of a new era in elite chess, bringing together the world’s best players to compete across multiple time controls in a single championship.

A New Chapter in Competitive Chess

The Total Chess World Championship Tour is a FIDE-approved initiative developed by Norway Chess with the aim of identifying the world’s most complete chess player. Unlike traditional tournaments that focus on a single format, the Tour combines Fast Classical, Rapid, and Blitz chess, rewarding versatility across all three disciplines. The 2026 Budapest event will serve as the official pilot before the full championship circuit launches in 2027.

The pilot event will be held at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel in Budapest and will feature a 24-player field, with invitations extended through multiple qualification pathways.

Five Indian Stars Earn Qualification

India’s representation is among the strongest in the tournament, with five players qualifying through different criteria.

Players must formally accept their invitations before the final participant list is confirmed.

D. Gukesh

The reigning World Chess Champion receives an automatic berth, making him one of the headline attractions of the event. Gukesh enters the tournament as one of the favourites to capture the inaugural combined-format title.

R. Vaishali

Vaishali secured her place after winning the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, continuing her remarkable rise among the world’s elite women players.

Arjun Erigaisi

Arjun qualified through his outstanding performance at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Championship, where he claimed the bronze medal and earned a coveted invitation to the pilot event.

R. Praggnanandhaa

Praggnanandhaa qualified based on his position among the world’s highest-rated classical players, reflecting his consistency at the highest level of international chess.

Viswanathan Anand

Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand also earned qualification through the rating list. The legendary grandmaster’s inclusion adds immense prestige and experience to the Indian contingent.

Players must formally accept their invitations before the final participant list is confirmed.

Elite International Line-up

The tournament will be led by Magnus Carlsen, who has confirmed his participation. The Norwegian superstar will be joined by many of the world’s strongest grandmasters, including:

  • Hikaru Nakamura
  • Fabiano Caruana
  • Alireza Firouzja
  • Vincent Keymer
  • Nodirbek Abdusattorov
  • Anish Giri
  • Wei Yi
  • Wesley So
  • Ju Wenjun
  • Javokhir Sindarov
  • Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
  • Vladislav Artemiev

The presence of such a distinguished field promises one of the strongest chess events ever assembled across multiple formats.

A Revolutionary Tournament Format

The Total Chess World Championship Tour has been designed to reward all-round excellence rather than specialization. Players will compete in:

  • Fast Classical (45 minutes + 30-second increment)
  • Rapid (15 minutes + 10-second increment)
  • Blitz (3 minutes + 2-second increment)

Performances across all formats will contribute to the overall standings, with the combined results determining the champion. This innovative approach aims to crown the most versatile player in world chess.

Looking Ahead

The Budapest pilot event will serve as a testing ground before the full Total Chess World Championship Tour launches in 2027, featuring multiple tournaments across different cities and culminating in the crowning of the first FIDE World Combined Champion. The project has received strong backing from FIDE, Norway Chess, and investors including Norwegian football star Erling Haaland, highlighting the growing ambition to expand chess’s global appeal.

With five elite players earning qualification, India once again demonstrates the extraordinary depth of its chess talent. As the country continues producing world-class grandmasters across generations, the Total Chess World Championship Tour presents another opportunity for Indian players to compete for one of the sport’s most innovative and prestigious new titles.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
