October 18, 2026: Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has said he is ready to contest the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections from Keishamthong if the party offers him a ticket, signalling his willingness to enter state-level politics amid the controversy surrounding his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
“I am ready to fight elections from Keishamthong. If the party offers me a ticket, I will contest the Keishamthong assembly constituency. This decision is for the future of the state,” Akoijam said at an event in Imphal on Sunday.
Akoijam, who represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha, was dismissed from his post as a professor at JNU on October 9 following an inquiry into sexual harassment complaints filed by 11 female students, according to reports. The university said the action followed the recommendation of its Internal Committee.

The allegations reportedly included inappropriate remarks, intrusive personal questions and unwelcome physical contact. An FIR has also been registered by Delhi Police, and Akoijam has been asked to join the investigation.
Akoijam has denied the allegations, called the proceedings politically motivated and indicated that he would challenge the university’s decision in court. The allegations and the university’s action have triggered protests and demands for his resignation from Parliament, while supporters have called for due process.
Keishamthong is Akoijam’s home constituency in Imphal West. The seat was won by Independent candidate Sapam Nishikant Singh in the 2022 Assembly election by a margin of 187 votes. The Congress finished with 73 votes, according to the constituency’s published election results.
Akoijam’s possible entry into the Assembly contest comes as Congress seeks to rebuild its political position in Manipur ahead of the 2027 elections. Whether the party nominates him from Keishamthong remains undecided.
