Datia (Madhya Pradesh), August 3: The Congress has successfully retained the Datia Assembly seat in a fiercely contested by-election, with its candidate Ghanshyam Singh emerging victorious over BJP nominee Ashutosh Tiwari. The result is being viewed as a significant morale booster for the Congress in Madhya Pradesh while dealing a political setback to the BJP in a constituency that witnessed an intense campaign by both parties.
The by-election attracted statewide attention as it was seen as a prestige battle between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. Campaigning was marked by aggressive rallies, high-profile roadshows and sharp exchanges over governance, development, unemployment and local leadership. A strong voter turnout reflected the high level of public interest in the contest.

A Crucial Victory for Congress
The victory enables the Congress to retain its hold over Datia and reinforces its claim that it remains a formidable challenger to the BJP in Madhya Pradesh. Party leaders described the verdict as an endorsement of their grassroots campaign and their focus on local issues.
Celebrations erupted among Congress workers after the results were declared, with supporters distributing sweets and raising slogans in support of Ghanshyam Singh and the party leadership.
Ghanshyam Singh’s Campaign
Ghanshyam Singh built his campaign around issues affecting ordinary citizens. Throughout the election, he promised better roads, improved healthcare facilities, quality education, employment opportunities for youth, stronger support for farmers and transparent governance.
The Congress campaign also highlighted rising prices, unemployment and local development concerns, arguing that the constituency needed leadership that remained connected with people even after elections.
BJP’s Intensive Campaign
The BJP mounted an equally aggressive campaign, fielding Ashutosh Tiwari and deploying senior party leaders to seek votes. The ruling party highlighted its development agenda, welfare schemes and infrastructure projects while urging voters to continue supporting the BJP.
Despite its extensive campaign and organisational strength, the BJP was unable to retain the seat. Political observers believe local issues and the Congress’s strong grassroots mobilisation played an important role in shaping the outcome.
Factors Behind the Congress Victory
Several factors appear to have contributed to the Congress win:
- Strong booth-level organisation and voter outreach.
- Consolidation of the party’s traditional support base.
- Effective campaigning on local civic and development issues.
- Focus on employment, agriculture and public welfare.
