Welcoming Praggnanandhaa at the Secretariat, Chief Minister Vijay described him as a symbol of dedication, discipline, and excellence whose achievements have inspired millions of youngsters across Tamil Nadu and the country.

The ₹50 lakh cash award was presented through the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) as part of the state’s continued commitment to recognising and encouraging sporting excellence.
A Friendly Chess Match Steals the Show
One of the most memorable moments of the felicitation ceremony came when the Chief Minister and the Grandmaster sat down for a friendly game of chess.
Despite the relaxed atmosphere, Praggnanandhaa displayed the same calmness and precision that have become hallmarks of his game. Unsurprisingly, the Grandmaster emerged victorious, drawing smiles and applause from those present. The light-hearted encounter added a personal touch to the ceremony and highlighted the Chief Minister’s enthusiasm for the sport.
Praggnanandhaa later appreciated Vijay’s sporting spirit and willingness to engage with the game, saying such gestures help popularise chess among young people.
‘A Special Honour at Home’
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Praggnanandhaa said receiving the honour in his home state made the occasion particularly meaningful.
“It is always special to be recognised by your own people. Tamil Nadu has supported me throughout my journey, and I am grateful for the encouragement I have received. Such recognition motivates me to work even harder and continue striving for greater achievements,” he said.
The Grandmaster also acknowledged the role played by his family, coaches, and supporters in helping him reach the highest levels of international chess.

“Praggnanandhaa’s historic victory has brought glory to our state and the nation. The government remains committed to supporting talented athletes and ensuring they receive the encouragement they deserve,” he said.
Praggnanandhaa’s triumph comes at a time when Indian chess is enjoying unprecedented success on the global stage. Alongside World Champion D. Gukesh and his sister Grandmaster R. Vaishali, Praggnanandhaa represents a new generation of Indian players who have transformed the country’s standing in international chess.
Norway Chess Triumph for the Ages
The Norway Chess tournament, held in Oslo from May 25 to June 5, is regarded as one of the strongest and most prestigious events on the global chess calendar. Praggnanandhaa’s title-winning campaign included several standout performances against the world’s best players.
His victory over Magnus Carlsen, achieved in front of the Norwegian legend’s home crowd, was among the defining moments of the tournament. Equally significant was his success against fellow Indian Grandmaster and World Champion Gukesh, underlining the extraordinary depth of talent emerging from India.
By lifting the Norway Chess trophy, Praggnanandhaa not only etched his name into the history books but also strengthened Tamil Nadu’s reputation as India’s chess capital.
