CJP Demands Immediate Release of Detained Protesters

Reports of arrests across multiple states have prompted CJP to urge Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh to honour promises made before the agitation ended.

New Delhi, July 27, 2026: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has voiced strong concern over a wave of detentions and arrests of participants reported from various parts of the country. The organisation has formally appealed to the Union government to uphold commitments it says were given before the protests were withdrawn. Central to those commitments was an assurance that participants would face neither FIRs nor any form of punitive measures, now or later, in states governed by the BJP or its NDA allies.

In a statement, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das noted: “The Cockroach Janta Party had called off its nationwide protest only after the Government of India assured us that no punitive action would be taken against any protestor, either now or in the future, in any BJP-ruled or NDA-ruled states. The reports emerging from these states are therefore a matter of grave concern.”

The group has specifically urged Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh to act without delay—securing the release of those in custody, blocking any further coercive steps, and ensuring the withdrawal of existing FIRs. It has also requested a formal written confirmation of these guarantees.

The agitation was suspended on Saturday, 25 July, after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down and the Centre indicated it would address the CJP’s principal requests. Those requests covered:

Highest possible compensation for families of individuals who died by suicide linked to the NEET paper leak
Cancellation of all related FIRs filed by the Centre or NDA-ruled states, together with a permanent bar on action against participants
Serious examination of the CJP’s five-point plan for examination reforms, including direct talks with the government

Despite claims that these points had been accepted, accounts of detentions soon appeared from Bihar, West Bengal and elsewhere.A notable case centres on Mohammad Junaid, a CJP volunteer from Ghaziabad. Reports state that police searched his home the day before the protest ended, detained relatives and confiscated bank passbooks and PAN cards. Junaid further alleged harassment of his family in Meerut; the local police have rejected the accusation. CJP spokesperson Ratna Singh has confirmed that Junaid remains safe and is receiving legal support, affirming the organisation’s continued backing for him and other volunteers.

The latest appeal arrives amid separate criticism of the CJP itself, after videos circulated showing members—including Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka—apparently celebrating at a Delhi hotel in the wake of Pradhan’s resignation. The timing of those images, coinciding with detention reports, drew sharp reactions from some who had backed the original movement.
