Beijing has thrown its weight behind Pakistan’s call for an independent investigation into India’s accusations regarding the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack. Pakistan had urged Western nations, Russia, and China to conduct this probe.
In a phone conversation on Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed Beijing’s support to Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Yi endorsed the prompt initiation of an impartial investigation into the terrorist attacks on Indian soil. According to The Global Times, he also expressed hope that both India and Pakistan “would exercise restraint, move towards each other, and work to de-escalate tensions.”
The phone call, requested by Pakistan, saw Dar update Wang Yi on the latest developments following the Pahalgam attack. Dar stated that Pakistan opposes actions that escalate tensions and remains resolute in its commitment to combating terrorism. He also assured China of Pakistan’s intention to manage the situation maturely and maintain close communication with Beijing and the international community.

Reaffirming the strong bilateral ties, Wang Yi described China as Pakistan’s “ironclad friend and a cooperative partner under any circumstances.” He acknowledged the legitimacy of Pakistan’s security concerns and assured Dar of China’s support in upholding Pakistan’s sovereignty and security interests.
Concluding the call, Yi underscored that a conflict between India and Pakistan would be detrimental to regional peace and stability and would not serve the fundamental interests of either country. He reiterated his hope that both sides would “exercise restraint, move toward each other, and work to de-escalate tensions,” as reported by The Global Times.

China’s support comes after India launched a strong five-point response to the Pahalgam terror attack. This included a diplomatic offensive against Pakistan, marked by the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the closure of the Wagah-Attari Border, and the halting of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals, with a 48-hour deadline for those in India to leave.
