The Nalbari assault case in Assam has taken a tragic turn with the death of 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka, who succumbed to her injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on July 3 after battling for her life for more than a month.
Her death raises the toll in the brutal assault to two, following the death of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman, who was killed during the attack on May 30.
What Happened in the Nalbari Assault Case?
According to police, the incident occurred on the night of May 30 in Gangapur, under the Mukalmua area of Assam’s Nalbari district.
Mridumudra Deka and Madhurjya Barman were reportedly returning home on a scooter from Nalbari town when they were allegedly intercepted and attacked by Roz Ali.
The victims were later found lying by the roadside with multiple serious injuries. While Madhurjya Barman was declared dead at the scene, Mridumudra Deka was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being shifted to GMCH in Guwahati, where she remained under intensive medical care for over a month.
Despite doctors’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on July 3.
Who Was Madhurjya Barman?
The first victim, Madhurjya Barman, was a resident of Balipathar in Chamata, Nalbari district.
He served as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union and was actively involved in student affairs. His death had triggered widespread grief and protests across the district.
Public Outrage After the Attack
The incident sparked widespread outrage across Nalbari and other parts of Assam.
Residents, student organisations, and several local groups organised protests demanding a swift investigation and strict legal action against those responsible for the attack.
The case quickly became one of the most discussed criminal incidents in the state, with calls for justice growing stronger as the investigation progressed.
Police Have Not Confirmed Claims About the Motive
Following the incident, some groups on social media and in public discussions attempted to link the case to allegations of “love jihad.”
However, Assam Police have not officially confirmed any motive behind the attack and have not endorsed those claims. The investigation into the circumstances and motive behind the assault is continuing.
Prime Accused Roz Ali Killed in Police Encounter
The investigation later led police to the prime accused, Roz Ali.
According to official reports, he was shot dead during a police encounter conducted by Assam Police in the Mukalmua area while the investigation was underway.
Authorities have continued to investigate the case to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the assault.
