Veteran actor Anupam Kher has shared a cryptic video on social media amid the ongoing controversy surrounding his remarks on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The actor said he speaks openly on sensitive issues because he does not believe in trying to please everyone.
His statement comes after facing criticism online for describing the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft as a “minor issue” in comparison to historical atrocities during the Mughal era. The controversy also drew a response from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
“I don’t try to please everyone,” says Anupam Kher
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Kher addressed the criticism without directly naming anyone.
He said many people often ask him how he speaks so fearlessly on controversial subjects without worrying about becoming unpopular.
According to the actor, the answer is simple.
“Perhaps it is because I do not try to please everyone.”
Kher added that trying to keep every person happy is one of the most difficult tasks in life because no individual has ever been universally liked. He said that the moment someone attempts to become everyone’s favourite, people begin using them according to their own convenience.
The actor further stated that constantly saying what others want to hear can eventually make a person lose their own identity.
Sharing his personal philosophy, Kher said people should first become their own favourite rather than seeking validation from others.
He added that one should be able to look in the mirror with self-respect and, if they feel they need to improve, they should do so for personal growth rather than to satisfy society.
He concluded by saying that neither he nor anyone else has the responsibility of making the entire world happy.
Why did Anupam Kher face backlash?
The latest video follows criticism over comments Kher made during his recent visit to Ayodhya regarding the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir.
Reacting to his remarks, Akhilesh Yadav questioned the actor’s stand in a post on X.
Yadav wrote that it was unusual to advise those exposing a theft instead of condemning the alleged thief, adding that such sympathy could stem from political compulsions.
Responding to the criticism, Kher dismissed the controversy, saying he did not consider himself important enough for Yadav to comment on him.
The actor also claimed that only a part of his original statement had been circulated, which, according to him, created a misleading impression.
He urged Yadav to watch his complete remarks before forming an opinion and added that, as a follower of Sanatan Dharma, Yadav would understand that such incidents could never diminish the prestige of Lord Ram.
