The 59th Biel Chess Festival is underway in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, from 11–24 July 2026, continuing one of the world’s longest-running and most innovative chess traditions. Since its inception in 1968, the Biel Festival has earned a reputation for experimenting with formats while consistently attracting elite grandmasters, rising prodigies, and ambitious amateurs from across the globe. This year’s edition features more than 500 participants competing across elite invitationals and multiple open tournaments, making Biel one of the most diverse chess festivals on the international calendar.
Masters Triathlon: The Festival’s Premier Event
The highlight of the festival is the Masters Triathlon, a six-player invitational event that tests competitors across multiple time controls rather than relying solely on classical chess. The format rewards versatility, requiring players to excel in Chess960, Rapid, Blitz, and Classicalchess over nearly two weeks of competition.
Masters Triathlon Participants

The field combines established stars with emerging talent. Former World Cup winner Levon Aronian makes his Biel debut, while Vietnam’s Lê Quang Liêm, a three-time Biel Masters champion, returns looking to reclaim the title. Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum enters with excellent recent form, and Turkish prodigy Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, the youngest player ever to surpass the 2700 Elo mark, represents the tournament’s exciting new generation. Mexico’s José Martínez and Azerbaijan’s Aydin Suleymanli complete an evenly matched lineup capable of producing fighting chess in every format.
Generations Challenge
Running alongside the Masters is the Generations Challenge, another six-player invitational that follows the same Triathlon structure. The event features experienced grandmasters competing alongside young talents, with Indian star R. Vaishali representing India. The field also includes former Women’s World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, American champion Carissa Yip, Czech prodigy Václav Finek, Chinese Grandmaster Xiao Tong, and Italian IM Marco Materia.

Tournament Format
Unlike conventional elite tournaments, the Biel Masters uses its distinctive Triathlon system, rewarding players for success across several disciplines.
The competition begins with an ACCENTUS Chess960 tournament, followed by a Rapid round-robin. Players then contest a Classical double round-robin phase before an action-packed Blitz tournament. Finally, the leading players advance to a concluding classical stage that determines the overall champion.
Each discipline contributes points toward the overall Triathlon standings, meaning consistency across all formats is essential. A player cannot rely solely on classical chess; success requires adaptability, opening creativity, tactical sharpness, and endurance. This unique structure has become Biel’s trademark and distinguishes it from nearly every other elite tournament in the world.
More Than an Elite Tournament
Beyond the invitational events, the Biel Chess Festival hosts an extensive schedule of competitions catering to players of every strength. Participants can compete in classical open tournaments, rapid and blitz championships, Chess960 events, solving contests, and several rating-limited competitions. This inclusive approach attracts hundreds of players annually, creating an environment where amateurs and elite grandmasters compete under the same festival umbrella.
Early Developments
The festival opened with the Chess960 competition, where Matthias Bluebaum captured first place after edging Aydin Suleymanli on tiebreaks. Attention then shifted to the Rapid section of the Masters Triathlon, where Levon Aronian delivered a commanding performance, scoring four consecutive victories after an opening draw to finish the day with a clear lead in the standings. Meanwhile, Václav Finek emerged as the leader in the Generations Challenge rapid event.

A Celebration of Modern Chess
The Biel Chess Festival continues to stand apart through its willingness to innovate while preserving its rich tradition. By combining classical strategy with rapid calculation, blitz precision, and the creativity of Chess960, the festival rewards the most complete chess players rather than specialists in a single format. As the competition progresses toward its decisive classical stages, fans can expect thrilling encounters between seasoned veterans and the next generation of chess stars.
With its unique format, world-class field, and festival atmosphere, the 59th Biel Chess Festival once again reinforces its place among the most distinctive and prestigious events on the international chess calendar.
