Khalistan separatist Amritpal Singh files nomination from Khadoor Sahib
Amritpal Singh, a separatist Khalistani who is being held in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, submitted his nomination on Friday as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat.
The nomination was filed on behalf of the Waris Punjab De leader at the Khadoor Sahib office of the District Returning Officer by his attorney, Harjot Singh, his relative, Sukhchain Singh, and five other people.
DAG Punjab Arjun Sheoran told the court, “The detenue completed and signed two sets of nomination forms along with additional documentation on 09.05.2024. On May 9, 2024, the detainee was granted permission to meet with his advocate and proposer at the Dibrugarh Central Jail.”
Tarsem Singh, Amritpal’s father, was previously cited by news agency PTI as saying that he had no desire to run for office, “but he said if it (contesting poll) is the decision of the ‘sangat’ then he would change his decision and bow before the ‘sangat’.

Since there is no provision for administering the oath inside of a prison, the law states that a candidate who is incarcerated and wins an election may be released from custody to take the oath.
Prior to his detention in April of last year, Amritpal Singh said he did not believe in the Constitution. In addition, he had declared that he had the democratic right to believe or not believe in the Constitution.
Who is Amritpal Singh?
Amritpal Singh Sandhu is a self-described Sikh preacher and a hardline supporter of Khalistan. He returned to Punjab in September 2022 after ten years in Dubai, and was controversially appointed as the leader of Waris Punjab De.
He then launched a campaign encouraging young people to abstain from drugs, embrace traditional Sikhism, and support Khalistan, an independent Punjabi Sikh nation-state.

On April 23, of last year, Amritpal Singh was taken into custody in Moga’s Rode village after a protracted manhunt.
Amritpal Singh and his supporters engaged in clash with police on February 23 at Ajnala that same year. As a result, he was charged with multiple felonies, including attempting murder and causing public disturbance.
The Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha or the ‘Panthic’ seat has nine assembly constituencies. While Kulbir Singh Zira has been named by the Congress for the seat, candidates nominated by the Aam Aadmi Party, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal have also been announced.
