In a significant development for the global chess community, five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand has secured the role of Interim President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after current President Arkady Dvorkovich temporarily stepped aside following sanctions imposed by the European Union. The transition marks one of the most notable leadership changes in international chess in recent years and places one of the game’s greatest ambassadors at the helm of its governing body.

The move comes after the European Union included Dvorkovich, a former Russian Deputy Prime Minister, in its latest sanctions package related to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. In response, Dvorkovich voluntarily suspended the exercise of his presidential duties, stating that the restrictions could interfere with FIDE’s ability to function efficiently. While contesting the sanctions through legal channels, he emphasized that his decision was made to safeguard the federation’s operations.

According to the FIDE Charter, Deputy President Viswanathan Anand automatically assumes the responsibilities of Interim President during such a suspension. Anand will continue in this role until the sanctions are lifted or a legal decision changes Dvorkovich’s status.

Statement by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich

Today, the EU decision to include my name in the 21st sanctions list was published. I want to state unequivocally that I consider this decision unlawful and unfair, and this decision will be immediately challenged by all possible… pic.twitter.com/SmiinxF71u

A Historic Responsibility for Anand

Anand’s appointment is more than a procedural transition, it represents another milestone in a career that has transformed Indian chess. A five-time World Champion and the player widely credited with inspiring India’s chess revolution, Anand has also built a reputation as a respected administrator since becoming FIDE Deputy President in 2022.

His elevation to interim leadership places one of the sport’s most trusted figures in charge during a politically sensitive period. Anand is expected to oversee FIDE’s day-to-day operations while ensuring continuity across its global calendar, including international tournaments, development initiatives, and preparations for the upcoming FIDE General Assembly.

Stability at a Crucial Time

The leadership change arrives just months before FIDE’s scheduled presidential election during the General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Dvorkovich has previously expressed his intention to seek another term, but the sanctions introduce uncertainty into the federation’s political landscape.

Despite the circumstances, FIDE has stressed that its governance structure allows for uninterrupted administration. Anand’s extensive experience within the organization and his universal respect across the chess world are expected to provide stability during this transitional phase.

A Proud Moment for Indian Chess

Anand’s appointment also highlights India’s growing influence in world chess. Over the past decade, the country has emerged as a global powerhouse, producing elite grandmasters and world class young talent. Having an Indian legend lead FIDE, even in an interim capacity, reflects both Anand’s personal stature and India’s rising prominence within the international chess community.

As the federation navigates a complex geopolitical situation, Anand’s calm leadership, administrative experience, and decades long contribution to the sport position him well to guide FIDE through this period of transition.

Whether temporary or not, his tenure as Interim President adds another distinguished chapter to an extraordinary career, this time, not only as a champion over the chessboard but also as a leader entrusted with shaping the future of the global game.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
